Spring Clean

Have you noticed the sun is rising earlier and setting later??!! Spring is on its way and that means it’s a great time to start spring cleaning. And why not start with your skin products?

Let’s first take a look at face care. While you wash your face every night ( or you intend to at least 😉 ) you’ve had that intensive face cream you purchased at the drug store what seems like a for-ever ago…ever wonder if it expires, ever wonder why it does not?
While it is still cold and dry out, and a good idea to keep an intensive cream in your regimen for the next couple of weeks let’s consider why that cream does not expire. Parabens.
What are Parabens? A: Parabens are a group of synthetic compounds commonly used in cosmetics as a preservative. Cosmetics such as deodorant, lotions, face washes, etc. Basically any beauty or healthcare product that has moisture has the potential to become contaminated by microbes. Methylparaben and ethylparaben are the most commonly used preservatives to ward off those microbes. While these ingredients are shown to be safe and used in small amounts, some questions have arisen regarding estrogenic potential over long term use and its link to breast cancer. However studies have shown much more research is needed in order to establish a relationship.

Most commonly Parabens, as is the case for many preservatives, can be allergenic in a small subset of the population.
The use of “natural” preservatives has been advocated, including grapefruit seed extract (GSE). Unfortunately, GSE can interact with medications due to its ability to inhibit CYP3A4, an important enzyme involved in drug metabolism. Other natural preservatives include thymol, cinnamaldehyde, allyl isothiocyanate, citric acid, ascorbic acid and rosemary extract.
While these ingredients are natural and a better alternative, like Parabenbs, allergenic reaction in a small subset of the population in known.
We sell products from two skin care lines, Mychelle Dermaceuticals, Aubrey Organics, and IMAGE Skincare. These companies offer products that are free of harmful preservatives such as parabens; carcinogenic UV protectants, such as oxybenzone; and other harmful chemicals such as propilene glycol, DEA and TEA.
So get a head start on spring cleaning. Book your appointment for a Microdermabrasion or Laser Hair Removal (hello bikini season!) and request a consultation on what skin products might work best for you!
